Plumbing: A Quick Definition

Plumbing is something that the majority of us take for granted. Let’s face it, we almost never think of plumbing until there is a problem, usually when the plumbing has stopped or when there is a leak, flooding and water damage. Many of us associate plumbing with a negative event, expense, and something to dread.

However, if you look at the history of plumbing and how much it has changed our lives for the better, your feelings might just change on the subject.

Plumbing itself comes from Latin meaning “lead” because of the material used to make the pipes at the time. Plumbing today refers to several different things along the same line. In general, plumbing is the system of pipes and fixtures that bring water into and out of a house or building (this can include the system used to heat the water as well). An example of this definition used in a sentence is, “The plumbing looks good in the house I want to buy.” It also refers to the pipes and fixtures that take waste out of a building also known as sewage – as in, “Call the plumber, the plumbing in the toilet is overflowing!” Finally, plumbing also means the action of working in the field, with these pipes, fixtures, and systems. An example of this is, “She is plumbing the sink now!”

Understanding what plumbing means can help make the problems associated with plumbing easier to confront. When you need to fix a leak, install a new water heater, get some water damage repaired, or even unplug the toilet, you will be involved in the work, field and business of plumbing!
